In simultaneous interpretation, the conference interpreter sits in a sound-proof booth and interprets into a microphone. The interpreter renders the speaker's words into the target language "simultaneously" or while the speaker is speaking so that the listeners can hear the speech in their own language on headphones. Simultaneous interpreting is frequently the mode of choice for conferences, meetings and corporate events, although many may be more familiar with it from television or the European Parliament.

In consecutive interpretation, the interpreter takes notes while listening to the speaker and then interprets the speech into the target language. The interpreter can either convey the content after a few sentences or after longer passages of several minutes in length. Consecutive interpreting particularly lends itself to dinner speeches or factory tours.
